Diary
Today, our family held a card game convention.
It was planned and explained by my daughter. The idea was as follows:
- Game 1: Old Maid (Babanuki) using a standard deck of cards
- Game 2: Kurohige Kiki Ippatsu (a toy from a McDonald’s Happy Meal)
- Game 3: The “Hha” reaction game (also a toy from a McDonald’s Happy Meal)
- Game 4: Pokémon card game
Rules:
- The winner of each game earns one point.
- Each game is played once.
- If players are tied with the same number of points after all games, they play a final round of Old Maid to decide the overall champion.
Results:
- Game 1 winner: my wife
- Game 2 winner: my daughter
- Game 3 winner: my wife
- Game 4 winner: my daughter
My wife and daughter were tied on points, so a championship game was held. In the final round, my wife won and became the first champion of our family’s card game convention.
I felt truly happy to spend this time together as a family and appreciated my daughter’s wonderful idea.

IELTS Improvement Points
Collocation:
“spend time together as a family”
→ Common and natural phrase for describing shared family activities. Much more idiomatic than “spending this time together whole my family.”
“earn a point” / “score a point”
→ Typical expression used in games or competitions. Instead of “gets one point,” say “earns” or “scores.”
“tied on points” / “level on points”
→ Proper collocation for describing equal scores.
Template:
“It was [adjective] to [verb] with [person].”
→ e.g. “It was lovely to spend time with my family.”
→ Useful in IELTS Task 1 or Task 2 to express personal experiences or opinions.
“The [noun] was as follows:”
→ A formal and natural way to present lists or concepts clearly.
→ Great for IELTS Writing Task 1 when describing data or steps.
Vocabulary:
“champion” (noun)
→ Correct spelling; not “campion.” Used for the winner of a competition.
“tournament” / “championship”
→ Alternatives to “convention,” which is often used for gatherings, not competitions.
“appreciated”
→ Stronger and more precise than “got pleased.” Use this to express gratitude or recognition.
“reaction game”
→ A specific game type that relies on quick responses. Useful vocabulary when describing toys or activities.
