I want to find a career for the next 10 years while I’m in my 40s, retire early by 60, and spend the rest of my life enjoying my hobby of traveling.
I would like my next career to be one that earns foreign currency (dollars). Japan’s national power has been declining recently, and earning yen in Japan is inefficient and risky. However, I need to improve my English skills. My TOEIC score was around 400.
In addition, it would be preferable to be self-employed. One of my children has a developmental disorder. Considering his future, leaving a business where we can work together would be a risk hedge.
In order to be self-employed overseas, I must improve my English skills above all else. Next, I will find connections and work in the country where I will be working (Australia is the most likely candidate), and eventually become independent.
How do I learn English?
I thought that I would not be able to acquire a working level of English by attending an English school, as is the common method. How about studying abroad? Studying abroad costs a lot of money, and leaving the family would be a big burden on my wife.
At that time, while searching the web for ways to study abroad or work overseas, I found a recruitment for an overseas volunteer program. I was attracted by the conditions of the program.
Advantages
- The organizer will cover living expenses and travel expenses for the two years in the country.
- I will receive an allowance of about 2 million yen for the two years of the program.
- I can participate in two months of language training before I am assigned.
- I can volunteer in the country using a foreign language.
Disadvantages
- I will have to leave my family for two years.
- I will have to quit my job to participate.

If I am sent to a country where English is the official language through this program, I will definitely acquire a level of English that allows me to work in English. In addition, not only is there no cost, but I will also receive an allowance. It is an excellent condition for acquiring English. The only thing left is whether the disadvantages can be eliminated.
I immediately consulted my wife and told her, “I found a way to work overseas.” She said, “If you want to do it, I will support you.” and “Leave the house and children to me.”
