Correct version
A tablet which I bought for my mother arrived at my parents’ home. It was intended for her to use an e-learning service. She needs to obtain a new qualification for her job, and she must complete the e-learning course in order to earn it. However, she only had a mobile phone, so I bought the tablet for her. I explained how to set up the tablet via a video call, and eventually she managed to connect it to the internet.
IELTS Improvement Points
Collocation:
obtain a qualification
→ “Obtain” is a formal verb often used in academic/professional contexts, stronger and more precise than “get”. Useful in IELTS Writing Task 2 when discussing education or careers.
set up a device
→ A natural phrase for preparing electronic devices for use. More idiomatic than “make the tablet ready” or “arrange the tablet”.
Template:
[Subject] needs to [verb] in order to [goal]
→ Example: She needs to study in order to pass the exam. This structure clearly shows purpose, improving coherence and grammatical range.
[Someone] managed to [verb]
→ Expresses success after difficulty. Example: He managed to finish the task on time. This is stronger and more nuanced than simply saying “could”.
Vocabulary:
eventually
→ Means “after some time” or “in the end”. Adds sophistication to time sequencing and improves lexical resource score.
explain (something) via (method)
→ Using “via” is more formal and precise than simply “by”. Example: I explained the problem via email. Suitable for IELTS writing.
